Powers
  1. Eyes

Remy’s most obvious mutation is that of his eyes with the normally white sclera replaced with black and his iris coloured red. His eyes also glow when he is using his second mutation, kinetic energy manipulation, and at times when he is extremely emotional. When he was briefly fully depowered by the High Evolutionary his eyes reverted to a shade of brown.

  2. Kinetic Energy Manipulation

Remy’s second mutation is that of kinetic energy manipulation, whereby he taps into potential energy and, using the bio-kinetic energy within his body, converts it into kinetic energy on contact.

Remy is not immune to the affects of his own powers, unlike some mutants (e.g. the Summers Brothers), and has injured himself with a charged object's detonation in the past.

Kinetic energy manipulation has four consequences:

    1. Detonation

When Remy ‘charges’ an object, converting its potential energy into kinetic energy, and throws it at a target the object releases this energy explosively on impact.

He generally prefers smaller objects, such as playing cards or pebbles, as larger objects take more time to ‘charge’ and are harder to throw with accuracy. If he wants, Remy can partially charge an object to reduce the amount of energy released. The only limitations real limitations to his ability to detonate things are time and moving the object to the target.

Remy usually charges objects by touching them with his hands, normally through gloves, however he can also use other parts of his body, such as his tongue.

Remy is unable to use this power to charge organic objects at its current reduced strength however, with his powers at full strength he is able charge any organic or inorganic object within his line of sight and manipulate the potency of the bio-kinetic energy to cause various effects such as burning or molecular discomfort.

For the most part he has been shown to have excellent control over this power and has used it in many different ways; including using a charge to disintegrate an object, using a charged air molecules to propel a team mate into the air, weakening doors, and creating time-delay charges that explode up to minutes later.

However at full strength he can barely control this power and it rages unchecked unless he exerts self-control, remains calm and concentrates. It was especially bad when he was an adolescent, and after some unfortunate lapses in his focus he went to Mr Sinister for a remedy which resulted in a reduction in strength.

He temporarily regained full strength and, more mature, Remy could control it better but still struggled to do so when emotionally upset or uptight. He burnt himself back down to his reduced level of power during a fight with the New Sun however and is no longer able to charge organic matter or via sight.

    2. Heat and Light

By charging an object to a certain degree it is possible for Gambit to illuminate everything within a 10 ft radius. This light is bright enought to read by. A charged object also emits heat, presumably enought that it could heat a room, although this would take time, complete concentration and a large expenditure of energy and is therefore rarely used.

    3. Speed and Agility

Gambit's ability to tap his internal bio-kinetic energy also grants him extremely heightened agility, dexterity and reflexes, with a slight increase in speed, and has at times allowed him to dodge or deflect bullets and other objects thrown at him.

While Rogue had his power after their first kiss, it was also implied that his need to be on the move and doing things constantly was related to a high energy metabolism associated with this.

    4. Psionic Shielding

The bio-kinetic energy in Remy’s body creates a form of static interference that acts to shield his mind from detection and intrusion by even the most powerful telepaths, such as Charles Xavier, Jean Grey and even the Shadow King. He can amplify this static by charging something.

  3. Charm

Remy also possesses a form of hypnotic 'charm' which allows him to exert a subtle influence over any sentient mind, although the effect of this is lessened if the target knows about it. This power allows him to compel others to believe what he says and agree with anything he suggests, to a certain extent.

It is unknown how strong this power is and what its exact nature is although there is much speculation that it is empathic in nature, however it is known that he has good control over it.

In the 2006/7 Handbook to the Marvel Universe entry on New Sun, it is mentioned that his charming ability is achieved by charging the subject's brain with energy through the use of his kinetic powers. However, since Remy has had his ability to charge living tissue removed and is still able to charm, it is unclear if this is applicable to him.

  4. Speculation

There has been speculation of other abilities tied into his existing mutations, although none of this has been proven or verified by official sources.

    1. Empathy / Psionic Ability

There has been speculation that Remy’s charm is actually derived from empathy or other psionic ability such as telepathy. The best indication of this is when he is able to psychically sneak up on Psylocke in the astral plane and cut her off from further invasions of his privacy after she had entered his mind without permission.

Another example of this is when he knew that Henri LeBeau had snuck into the mansion despite the fact that the security systems had not picked him up and no one else knew, although this could be attributed to the next ability.

    2. Kinetic / Spatial Awareness

It has often been speculated that Remy’s kinetic abilities give him the capability to ‘see’ the potential energy in objects, thus providing him with a form of spatial awareness.

    3. Night Vision

There is a lot of fan speculation that Remy’s unusual eyes give him night vision roughly equivalent to that of a cat.

    4. Extra Vertebrae

Further speculation on the enhanced agility and dexterity that Remy possesses is that it comes from a further physical mutation, that of one or more extra vertebrae in his spine.

    5. Advanced Kinetic Ability

Based on one panel in X-Men #163 where a blinded Remy sees a vision in the glow of a kinetically charged card it can be speculated that a further advancement of his kinetic ability is to see into the future.

This can also be seen within the speculation that Remy is the Witness, who is ‘everywhen’, and the abilities of the New Sun which include space and time manipulation.
