Once Remy was back in New Orleans Theoren and Gris-Gris called a Vote of No Confidence in him, challenging his ability to lead the Unified Guild. In avoiding the vote Remy was attacked by the Neo once again and the Guild came to his rescue, revealing that the vote had gone in favour of him.
The Earth was briefly turned into a maximum security prison for aliens and almost destroyed by the spawn of Ego, the living planet, shortly after. In New Orleans the Guild helped the fight by destroying the tendrils of the spawn, although they knew that it would bring them more out of the shadows than they ever had been before. Remy also helped one of the aliens on Earth, and it was revealed that the X-Cutioner who attacked during the Assassination Game was in fact New Son himself.
New Son returned from his exile not long after this and revealed that everyone had misspelled his name the whole time; it actually was New Sun. He took Remy to his own dimension and Earth and here told Remy that he was born in the alternate reality's foremost mutant research and genetic planning facility, where he was trained for the use and exploitation of his mutant powers. When he hit adolescence he was finally skilled and powerful enough to incinerate the facility and escape, where he then made his way to the X-Men and found a home and family for a few years, until he killed that reality's Phoenix.
He was banished from the team and then spent some years both as an ally and foe of various superhumans and teams. When he was 18 he was taken in by Jean-Luc LeBeau, whom he eventually called friend and mentor, and while with the Guilds he was informed of the prophecies of the Resurrection of the Old Kingdom and his role in them. He was supposed to bring about heaven on earth and lead everyone as one into the shining light of the sun.
In a most tragic sense he did, but instead of the utopia for which the Guilds had hoped, the energies of the Old Kingdom, when combined with his biokinetic powers, created an uncontrollable cascade of energy that destroyed everyone and everything save New Son. Driven mad by guilt and grief he tried to undo his actions by controlling time through manipulating the flow of kinetic energies, but he could only breach the space between multiverses. So, now able to travel between realities, he decided to prevent his alternate counterparts from making the same tragic mistake as he had.
His original plan for Remy’s Earth had been to create an alternate earth in orbit around the sun, to which end he had Remy appropriating the technology he needed, however the fake world that Doom had shifted back from the universe to which the Fantastic Four and the Avengers had gone made that impossible. The orbital paths were too precise, and enough tension already put on them, to make another earth feasible. Instead he decided to try and get Remy to understand and control his powers through the Assassination Game and as that had failed he was now going to kill him.
They fought across the world, both using their powers at full strength, Remy finally not fearing his powers. Eventually they arrived at the site of the Old Kingdom, where Remy saturated New Son with the full force of his powers. A statue of the ‘King’ then toppled and its spear stabbed New Sun, killing him and releasing all of the energy contained within him. As that alternate Earth evaporated Courier pulled Gambit through one of Quiet Bill’s portals back to Earth, unfortunately killing Quiet Bill in the process. Using his powers to saturate New Son cost however, burning his powers back to what they had been before Sinister had restored them.
Remy had one last adventure in New Orleans before leaving to return to the X-Men and paid off an old debt to Mambo Mastif, one of the most influential business men in New Orleans who used to be the fence for the Guild. Remy had incurred the debt when, as a young boy, he had tried to steal from Mastif and not only destroyed the amulet he had been after but had also been caught. To appease his daughter, who even at a young age was interested in Remy, Mastif allowed him to live, telling him that a time would come when he would have to pay that debt.
The time came when Mastif’s daughter Minnie had her heart stolen, literally, by Abrian Ducreste, who she had been dating despite Mastif’s warnings. Remy headed after Ducreste, knowing that Minnie wasn’t the only one who had lost her heart to him, and was able to defeat him after a fairly intense fight. He then spent time with Minnie, whose heart he had managed to restore.
For a while after this, little happened in Remy's personal life, however there were world changing event happening around him. Senator Kelly was assassinated, sending shockwaves throughout the world and Piotr sacrificed himself to activate the cure for the Legacy Virus that Moira McTaggert had discovered.
Moira however died from a brutal attack by Mystique before she was able to see the cure go into effect. Remy infiltrated the hospital Mystique was held in, intending to kill her, but Storm stopped him and together they learnt from Mystique about Destiny’s Diaries and the predictions they held.
Because Destiny's Diaries represented an irresistible chance to foresee and change them and, fearing the fact that Xavier already held more than one of them, Storm proposed that she form a team outside of the X-Men to find them. After recruiting Sage, Rogue, Storm, Thunderbird, Psylocke and Bishop, she asked Remy to join the team with them.
However Rogue answered for him, saying that he should be left out of it, worrying that he could be hurt since her powers were out of control and making her a threat to everyone around her. Persuaded by her argument Remy agreed to stay behind.
After some of Storm’s group had left the mansion Bishop found himself plagued by nightmares about himself and Remy fighting the X-Men, later revealed to be caused by a parasite living beneath his skin. This parasite, the Bete Noir, had power that rivalled the Phoenix Force and was slowly consuming Bishop's body intent upon unleashing its evil upon the universe.
Stryfe was responsible for the Bete Noir inhabiting Bishop and had the X-Men in thrall in an attempt to control the power for himself. Remy, the only member of the X-Men not under his thrall, rescued Bishop and took him to New Orleans. There they met one of Remy’s benefactors, the Witness, a man who could ‘remember’ all potential futures and was everywhere at once. Bishop was deeply confused to see the two men at the same time, as he still believed that the Witness was Gambit‘s future self. The ancient man called LeBeau neither denied nor confirmed that suspicion.
At first they tried to contain the energy build-up with a modified version of Havok’s old costume, Stryfe offering to help them once he realised that the Bete Noir was too powerful for him to control and would destroy everything. However it was too late, as the entity was about to break out, and with uncharacteristic self-sacrifice, Stryfe freed took the Bete Noir into himself and destroyed them both. Bishop and Remy both suspected however that Cable, who had been following them in an attempt to catch and kill Stryfe, might have had something to do with this.
Remy didn’t return to the mansion after this but instead to his thieving and globe hopping ways, leaving Guild leadership to Belladonna. Remy travelled to Spain, intending to find several gemstones of power known as the Madripoor set. One of the jewels was in the home of Vargas, who had recently made himself known as an enemy of Storm’s team by killing Psylocke. Since it was impossible to win a fight against Vargas Remy aimed to charm the man and managed to swipe the jewel from under his nose, unaware that Vargas let him get away with it. This Vargas had done because he had seen in one of Destiny’s Diaries that something important was in store for Remy in the near future, something that would cause him a lot of pain.
Remy’s path crossed that of Storm’s team soon after when as he found himself framed for the murder of the Australian crime lord, Miles Warbeck, whom he had tried to rob. Storm’s team, not believing that Remy was capable of murder, went in search of him to find out what truly happened. Rogue went off to find him on her own and met up with him in Sidney’s Chinatown. They also found Father Gow, one of the Triad’s leaders, murdered at the same time with one of Remy’s trademark cards in his back, a clear indication that someone was trying to frame him.
They were both taken prisoner by the Triad and tortured until they managed to free themselves and reveal who in the Triad had actually killed Father Gow. They left with Gow’s grandson Red Lotus, who had seen the true culprit escape, only to find themselves attacked by Sebastian Shaw and Lady Mastermind, who were behind the entire plot.
Red Lotus fled with Remy while Lady Mastermind used her illusions to turn Rogue against her team mates. Remy asked Red Lotus to save Sage, who was in Shaw’s possession and trapped within another of Lady Mastermind’s illusions, while he went to stop Rogue. He eventually managing to break through the illusion she was caught in, and after freeing Sage Red Lotus cleared Remy’s name.
Remy later asked Storm for the ruby inherited from her mother, which turned out to be another part of the Madripoor Set. Shaitan, a warrior from another dimension, kidnapped Remy and stole the all of the jewels in the Set not long after he had asked, using them in synch with Remy’s power in a Madripoor temple to create a portal that would allow his master Khan, and all his troops, to come through to this dimension. Remy was left helpless, bound under a force field, on an altar energizing the portal while his friends tried to stave off the invasion. In the end they realised they had to either free or kill Remy to eliminate the portal before it became a permanent fixture.
While the others entered the materialising tower, both to rescue Storm and to see if they could shut down the invasion from there, Rogue chose to stay behind and try to save Remy. However Vargas was also there intent on killing Rogue before she fulfilled another of Destiny’s prophecies and killed him. As Vargas fought his way into the temple which held Remy, the helpless man spat a charged piece of rock he had kept in his mouth in an attempt to topple building and kill himself, closing the portal permanently, something which he almost succeeded in doing.
Rogue flew in at the last moment, braving the collapsing temple, and covered him with her own body to protect him. This didn’t interrupt the beam however, as she absorbed Remy’s power and the portal was now drawing energy from her as well. As the beam drained Rogue she was trapped as well and helpless to do anything as Vargas stabbed them both with his sword.
Both of them survived this attack, although they were both mortally injured, and Rogue used the focused powers she now had control of, thanks to Sage, to bring Vargas to justice before collapsing and being taken to hospital. Remy was hovering between life and death in the hospital, even though Beast was performing surgery on him using advanced methods and nanotechnology, and his soul was leaving his body.
Rogue’s soul, with the help of Phoenix, followed and found him in what seemed to be a spirit version of his ancestral home in New Orleans. Remy was only waiting for her before moving on into the light and going to heaven, but even though he was at peace Rogue refused to let him move on and forced him to return.
The X-Men recovered however Remy and Rogue found that they had lost their powers due to the strain of the events that they had recently been through. Revelling in the fact that they were, for the foreseeable future, normal they decided to leave the team for a while to find out how things stood with their relationship now that they could have one without any of their powers interfering.
