Once they were in the past Remy learnt that his then-teenage father, along with his friend Belize Marceaux, had been taken prisoner by Candra. She was at this point infuriated with the Guild and also unwilling to renew her covenant with them for the Elixir of Life, due to them failing to get the Momentary Princess for her. She wanted them to find her knowledge that could help her against the looming threat of Apocalypse, and she was keeping the boys as insurance that they would find him. At Remy’s say so Jacques LeBeau, the current Patriarch, bought her knowledge of the whereabouts of Dr Nathaniel Essex, Sinister, whose help she could use. However this infuriated her further and she was about to destroy the Guild once and for all when Remy intervened.
After freeing the Guild, his young father and Belize, Remy introduced himself as to her as someone who she would meet in her future and his past and promised to help her. The Guild wanted to do the job themselves, blinded by Jacques LeBeau’s pride and refusal to let le Diable Blanc work with them. This led to a fight, during which Remy rescued his young father and escaped, leaving the Guild to head to New York on their own.
Remy, Courier and young Jean-Luc left England for New York, already running behind the Guild. However despite the fact that the Guild knew where Sinister was Remy knew who he was currently masquerading as, Dr Nathan Milbury, who had testified at the ‘black womb trial’ of Amanda Mueller.
Courier shape shifted into a woman and made an appointment, but Sinister discovered that ‘she’ was a mutant with morphing abilities and captured her instead. Meanwhile Remy and Jean-Luc set about finding the New Orleans Thieves, despite Jean-Luc’s uncertainty about whether he wanted to find them and the way the Guild was run.
At the home of Amanda Mueller the Thieves attacked Remy, unwilling to listen when he told them that finding Sinister was dangerous and that they didn’t know what they were messing with. Called upon to choose between his family and Remy Jean-Luc chose his family and knocked Remy out with a flowerpot, knowing that as he did he was making the wrong choice.
With the help of Amanda Mueller Remy also found Sinister, who had captured the Guild with ease, and made a deal with him both for the lives of the Guild members and the life of Courier, whom Sinister had reduced to a puddle of fluid. Sinister agreed to let the Guild track down Ozymandias to get a hold of his texts on the Old Kingdom for Candra while he restored Courier in exchange for some of Courier’s DNA. Unaware that Courier was a man Sinister inadvertently made his female form his default template.
Remy and Sinister followed the Guild to Ozymandias’ place and defeated Candra, who was then turned over to her fellow Externals, who were displeased with the fact that she had risked disturbing Apocalypse. Sinister then erased the dangerous knowledge of the Old Kingdom from the Guild’s minds and locked the information deep in Gambit’s subconscious, at the same time noticing that Gambit had undergone brain surgery before. Remy then headed to New Orleans to save Tante Mattie’s life.
Unfortunately, Sekmeht had not had an opportunity to program the auto-retrieval on the time machine and Remy and Courier had no way of returning to the present. Instead Remy improvised and, using the contents of the small silver vial that had cost him so much, he had Sinister re-implant the contents of it, raising his powers back to their strongest level.
Somehow, using his increased powers, he was able to travel back to the future with Courier, and he returned to the X-Men once again. At first, he was delighted with his new power-level, since one side-effect of it was that they now extended an external field around his body which enabled him to touch Rogue.
Their happiness only lasted a while as they found that their mutual tendency towards secrecy and their own issues and problems made them unable to sustain a relationship at that point. Since Remy’s powers were also becoming uncontrollable again, starting with minor static shocks and escalating into spontaneously charging patches of his team mate's skin and the inability to experience emotional extremes without charging things, he decided to call off their relationship.
If this wasn’t enough for Remy to deal with Jean-Luc suddenly stepped down as Guild leader, making him the new leader, which was unexpected since up to this point he was still considered exiled. Furthermore New Son abandoned his plans to create a new world and, despite Fontanelle’s protests, took out a contract on Remy, a contract which was taken up by all kinds of assassins and mercenaries, including the Assassin’s Guild and Belladonna.
Remy survived a first assassination attempt by Bullseye despite suffering what should have been a fatal wound, due to the arrival of the Assassins Guild, who wanted the kill for themselves. When they attacked Bullseye Remy managed to slip away, find the Thieves and with the help of Tante Mattie and his hypercharged powers, he was able to heal himself. More villains arrived, including Deadpool and Constrictor, and Remy was saved by FBI Agent Denti, an encounter made rather strange by the fact that they were attacked by Denti’s former vigilante alter ego, the X-Cutioner.
In the ensuing battle between the different villains and assassins who were all trying to collect the money on Remy’s head, Remy and Belladonna were buried under a falling building. They survived because of Remy using his powers to create a pocket for them and during the conversation that followed, Remy figured out that New Son had hired all of the assassins except the Guild.
It was revealed that Belladonna had volunteered the Assassins Guild because she was looking for a way to get closer to Remy, to figure out if she still loved him or not. Although Remy admitted that he didn’t know how he felt at this time they agreed that, now that they were the leaders of their respective Guilds, they could stop the feud and work together, both to figure out the prophecies about the Old Kingdom and restore to some normality to their lives. Remy then freed them by charging and dissolving the entire debris around them. It was at this time that the Guilds became the Unified Guild, with Remy as Patriarch and Belladonna as his Viceroy.
During this time Archangel had been contacted by Courier on behalf of New Son to attack Remy and he had agreed, still bitter about Remy’s involvement in the Morlock Massacre and his subsequent mutilation during that time. Archangel was however faking his agreement, working now with Remy in an attempt to get to the truth behind New Son.
Remy, and the few X-men who had come to investigate the battle between him and Archangel, found their way to New Son’s Crystal Cathedral, a place outside time as he finally let them in on his problem. New Son, revealed to be an energy being, reacted angrily to this double-cross and claimed that he was trying to save the world from Remy. He revealed that he was trying to make Remy realize the scope of his power, and this was why he had initiated the Assassination Game, knowing that Remy would have to up the use of his powers to survive. Shockingly at this point New Son was exposed as an alternate, older version of Remy.
After this revelation there was a battle which destroyed the citadel, and the X-Men left though one of Quiet Bill’s portals to their world, while New Son vanished through another. It was also revealed at this time that Jean-Luc LeBeau had gone to Russia to ask for the Antiquary’s help with some of the Guild Prophecies, although it has never been explained what came of that.
Meanwhile the X-Men had been restructured and reinstated, and Remy became the unofficial field leader of one of the groups, in addition to his other duties at the time such as running the Thieves Guild. No-one knows precisely how he became leader, since he was not the logical candidate in a team that contained Storm, Cable, Beast and Phoenix.
His leadership began in Venice when he sent jokers to the members of team as a signal to meet him there. When they arrived they were ambushed by the Neo, a group of highly-evolved beings seeking revenge for the death of their leader. After defeating them Phoenix tried to retrieve the memories that they had stolen from her, however she chose to link herself to a dying Neo in order to do so. This was what the Neo had wanted and it possessed her, revealing itself to be one of the ‘Lost Souls’, a psychic group of Neo. The X-Men had to go into her mind to rescue her, where they were at first possessed and then able to defeat the Lost Souls.
After the battle with the Lost Souls Remy revealed the reason he had summoned them. Someone who had done a favour for the New Orleans Thieves Guild had asked for the debt to be repaid and, despite his reservations about involving them in Guild business, Remy needed their help to do so. The team consented, expressing now the same doubts that would crop up repeatedly throughout Remy's leadership.
The person that the Guild owed turned out to be Alexei Vazhin from the KGB. One of his agents had gone to investigate a new nightclub that had quickly gained an unsavoury reputation and she had never returned. His department, specialising in research, lacked the ability to rescue her and he wanted Remy and his team to infiltrate the nightclub for him. Reluctantly the team agreed to support Remy, none too happy about taking on Guild business themselves, and they infiltrated 'The Slash' in disguise.
As it turned out the nightclub’s reputation was well-founded, as in addition to dancing it also served as the base for an interdimensional slaving cartel. As they attempted to free the agent the slavers were alerted to their presence and attacked them. Despite the fact that the team was able to defeat them, most of the slavers escaped. They were able to capture one of the leaders however, a creature by the name of Tullamore Voge, and gave him to the KGB for interrogation.
Voge's elite enforcers, the Crimson Pirates and their Sea Dogs, had gotten word of his capture and attacked the KGB to rescue him, in the process capturing the whole team, with the exception of Phoenix and Beast. They also took Archangel, Psylocke and Colossus prisoner from the other team, led by Rogue. Knowing that they were out of conventional options Remy suggested that they instead turn to trickery, pretending to become Voge’s allies in order to destroy him and the rest of the slaving cartel.
The raid that Remy and the X-Men with him helped with was a raid on Madripoorian aristocrats; however the remaining X-Men had gotten word of their apparent betrayal from Beast and Phoenix and to stop them the raid and their ‘fallen’ team mates. A pitched battle ensued, particularly between Remy and Rogue, and the remaining X-Men were captured too.
However this was another ruse, Remy having asked Rogue to trust him during the battle and asked the telepaths to provide cover for them all. Eventually they defeated the Goth, who was in charge of the whole cartel, Rogue using Remy’s borrowed powers to overload the already saturated energy absorber and cause him to explode.
In between his missions with the X-Men, Remy was also trying to find out more about his own past, to learn what New Son was after and what in his past was so important that he had had Fontanelle dig in the dreams of everyone he knew. However, after having the Guild break into the hospital he was born in, he found that the records of his birth had been erased.
As well as this, the Casket of All Tomorrows’ contents, needed to initiate the resurrection of the Old Kingdom had been destroyed. Remy, knowing how his Guild members worked, figured out that it had been two members of the Guild, Gris-Gris and Theoren, who had worked together to destroy both that and the records of his birth. Thinking the reason had been because of their dislike for him Remy was surprised to learn that his absent father had bid them do it.
He also had a run in with Mystique at this point, while he was attempting to rescue Courier from the White House where he was trying to find more information on the ‘Black Womb Project’. He ran his charge through the cells in Mystique’s body, causing an unpleasant burning sensation, and they agreed to a stalemate, Remy leaving with Courier and information about Black Womb.
