Things were dire for Remy after his abandonment outside the cold, powerless base without any sustenance or way of reaching civilisation. Desperate for food he began to explore the ruined base, even chewing off the plastic of some wires. In one of Magneto’s labs, he found a mutant consisting of green energy who joined with him, giving him the strength to survive until he was found and saved by the agents of a mysterious being calling himself New Son.
New Son wanted Remy to work for him in exchange for saving him, claiming that he wanted to save humanity by creating a new world as this one would soon be uninhabitable. Remy agreed somewhat hesitantly and undertook his first mission, in the Savage Land, to save an agent of New Son’s and steal some terraforming equipment from the High Evolutionary. The agent was the shapeshifting Jacob Gavin Jr, also known as Courier, and once Remy had rescued him and obtained the equipment they returned to civilisation.
It was during this time that Remy had an adventure that dealt somewhat with his fall from grace as a Catholic. Finding himself guardian of a fallen angel, Anielle, Remy found himself up against an emissary of the devil, Oliver Stoker, who wished to possess her.
Aided only by Tante Mattie, Marcello Vega, a catholic priest, and novice nun Sister Katrina he found that not everything was as it seemed and that Anielle had possibly been sent to teach both him and Katrina a lesson about the worth of one person’s soul and how flaws could strengthen them.
Some months later Storm and Shadowcat, who had rejoined the X-Men after Excalibur disbanded, ventured to South Korea, in response to request from Black Tom Cassidy for a thief's help. Upon their arrival they learnt that Juggernaut was in desperate need of someone to steal a jewel from the Cytorrak worshipers, because it had been used to rob him of his power and would eventually take his life as well.
Shadowcat and Storm were not the only thieves who wanted to obtain the jewel however and along the way, they were assisted in stopping a rampaging Juggernaut by Remy, who then agreed to work with them in their quest to find the jewel. He himself had been contacted to obtain it and to begin with he only agreed to help until the jewel was found, declaring that after that it was then every thief for themselves. In the end however, after fighting side-by-side with Shadowcat and Storm and gaining possession of the jewel himself, he returned it to Juggernaught instead of leaving with it.
During the pinch Storm expressed her hurt and anger over Remy not having let anybody know that he was still alive and her remorse at the X-Men's actions after the trial. The fact that he had returned the jewel and not kept it for himself, confirming to Storm that he was still the hero she had thought him to be, led her to ask him to return to the X-Men. She did not ask him to forget what had happened, instead she asked him to come back to work out the feelings and relationships that had been left unresolved due to his exile instead of letting them fester. Remy decided that she had a point and returned to the mansion with her and Shadowcat.
Remy however did not let anybody know how he had managed to survive and escape Antarctica, preferring instead to keep all knowledge of the work he was doing for New Son to himself knowing that the X-Men would not approve of him stealing for any reason. He was also suspicious of New Son’s true motives for wanting the items he was asking for and didn’t want to include the X-Men until he knew the truth, both in fear that he would be rejected again and because he considered it his obligation to fulfil.
Upon returning to the mansion, and still feeling that the team didn’t forgive him for his past and his inability to tell them about it, Remy decided he needed to determine where he stood and decided to stay in the boathouse for awhile. Rogue was also not sure where he stood and alternated between flirting shamelessly with him and giving him the cold shoulder.
Amid a fight with a self-proclaimed goddess Kali, who’s ‘mission’ it was to kill lovers, he and Rogue managed to talk through some of their issues. However the biggest issue, the fact that Remy still loved her, remained unresolved due the green mist parasite he had picked up in Antarctica. She revealed herself to Remy as a female entity that only he could see, and warned him that he belonged to her and she would hurt anybody who got in the way of that. Although Rogue saw it in his head, during the X-Men's successful hunt for Xavier, Remy was unwilling to tell her because of the threat to her and the other X-Men.
To make matters worse, one of the few surviving Morlocks joined the team at this point. Although calling herself Marrow now, she had been known as Sarah, and was the young girl that Remy had rescued from the Massacre. Surprisingly she was unaware of his role in the massacre and, this began to eat away at Remy, to whom her ignorance and his guilt made a painful combination. However he was not able to do anything about it at this time, despite vowing that nothing would happen to the girl if he could help it, since New Son gave him his next mission.
This mission was to steal information, and eventually part of a downed celestial vessel that had been in possession of an ancient Chinese warlord. It was during this mission that he first met Sekmeht Conway, an archaeologist with whom he would have a lot of contact in the next few months, when he saved her life outside of the warlord’s tomb.
His next mission was to steal alien technology from Elysian Enterprises, technology that had come from the tomb of the ancient Chinese warlord that he had previously entered. It was during this that FBI Agent Carl Denti, in his vigilante persona of the X-Cutioner, locked his sights on Remy and began a chase that would last months. During this mission Remy decided that the technology was too dangerous to fall into anybodies hands and so detonated it, ensuring that nobody would possess it.
Then he was asked to steal files on mutants from Moira McTaggert which he did, although he did not take the only copy as he had been instructed, instead leaving a second copy with Moira so that she still had her life’s work and a chance at curing the legacy virus.
Beginning to dislike the things the New Son made him do Remy secretly tailed Courier to get more information on their mysterious employer. Instead he watched a meeting of the Crew A.S.K.E.W. who Courier had been sent to secure the services of. However Courier’s mission failed when a strange yellow gas was released, disfiguring all the scientists, and then two mercenaries, the Mengo Brothers, arrived to transport all of them to the Pig.
Not wanting anything that powerful to fall into the hands of the Pig, with whom Remy had serious history, he grabbed the canister with the gas and fled, trusting Courier to look after himself. The Mengos gave chase, following him through New York and were eventually bested by Remy, who double-crossed them and kept the gas canister.
Near to the final showdown with the Mengos was a homeless mutant named Quiet Bill, who randomly called up teleportation portals, and the captured and deformed scientists were sucked through one of them. Remy, knowing that the Pig would do anything to get the gas back and that Quiet Bill was in danger, arranged for him to be taken in by New Son.
New Son was at this time as curious about Remy as his unwilling employee was about him and had employed a mutant named Fontanelle, a child of the ‘Black Womb Project’ that Sinister had had a hand in, who could gain access to other peoples’ memories through their dreams. Her job was to interrogate all people who knew Remy by sifting through their memories and she started with those closest to him, like Jean-Luc LeBeau and Tante Mattie.
After having been visited by Fontanelle in her sleep Tante, who was fully aware of what was happening at the time, summoned Remy to New Orleans to warn him about her. Once there Remy also learned that not only were both Guilds falling into disorder as a direct result of the demise of Candra but there was a vampire Assassin on the loose.
Teaming up with Blade, who was on the trail of the vampire and had mistakenly targeted Remy as one of the undead, Remy and the Thieves managed to both destroy the vampire and free the Antiquary’s ‘collection’, who were still based in New Orleans despite the Antiquary’s exile from the Guild.
Shortly after this Remy had to rescue Rogue from the X-Cutioner who was using her as bait, knowing that his target would come to rescue her. After his defeat Carl Denti realised that being the X-Cutioner was a betrayal of his calling as an agent of the law and the memory of his father who he was carrying out his ‘justice’ for, and retired his vigilante personality.
